A systematic review of socio-economic assessments in support of coastal zone management (1992-2011) ArchiMer
Le Gentil, Eric; Mongruel, Remi.
Cooperation between the social and natural sciences has become essential in order to encompass all the dimensions of coastal zone management. Socio-economic approaches are increasingly recommended to complement integrated assessment in support of these initiatives. A systematic review of the academic literature was carried out in order to analyze the main types of socio-economic assessments used to inform the coastal zone management process as well as their effectiveness. A corpus of 1682 articles published between 1992 and 2011 was identified by means of the representative coverage approach, from which 170 were selected by applying inclusion/exclusion criteria and then classified using a content analysis methodology. The percentage of articles that...

A Systems Approach Framework for the Transition to Sustainable Development: Potential Value Based on Coastal Experiments Ecology and Society
Hopkins , Tom S.; North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA; CNR Institute for Coastal Marine Environment, Naples, Italy; tom_hopkins@ncsu.edu; Bailly, Denis; University of Brest, Brest, France; Denis.Bailly@univ-brest.fr; Elmgren, Ragnar; Stockholm University; ragnar.elmgren@ecology.su.se; Glegg, Gillian; Plymouth Marine Station; G.Glegg@plymouth.ac.uk; Sandberg , Audun ; ; audun.sandberg@hibo.no.
This article explores the value of the Systems Approach Framework (SAF) as a tool for the transition to sustainable development in coastal zone systems, based on 18 study sites in Europe, where the SAF was developed and tested. The knowledge gained from these experiments concerns the practical aspects of (a) governance in terms of policy effectiveness, (b) sustainability science in terms of applying transdisciplinary science to social–ecological problems, and (c) simulation analysis in terms of quantifying dysfunctions in complex systems. This new knowledge can help broaden our perspectives on how research can be changed to better serve society. The infusion of systems thinking into research and policy making leads to a preference for...

Cote D’ivoire Coastal Zone : Phase 1: Integrated Environmental Problem Analysis OceanDocs
Ibo Guei, J.; Kouassi Aka, M.; Kouadio, A.; N’Goran Ya, N.; Jacques, A.; Kaba, N.; N’guessan, N..
This report is part of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)-Medium Size Project (MSP) on the Development and Protection of the Coastal and Marine Environment in Sub-Sahara Africa. The objective of the first phase of this project , involving eleven Sub-Saharan African countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa and Tanzania), are to: • identify sites or living resources of national, regional and global significance that are suffering measurable degradation; • identify sites and resources of regional significance that, although not currently degraded, are threatened with future degradation either because of the sensitivity of the receptor or the magnitude of the activity posing the...

Ecosystème estuarien et système économique régional : faisabilité d’une intégration par modélisation Input-Output. Application au cas de l'habitat halieutique dans l’estuaire de la Seine ArchiMer
Cordier, Mateo.
Mateo Cordier’s PhD addresses the interactions between the economic system and the ecosystem of the Seine estuary, an ecosystem deeply modified by human activities. His work aims at a holistic perspective and targets, among others, the destruction of nursery habitats and the subsequent impact on fish stocks in the Seine estuary. The hybrid input-output model developed in the PhD manuscript brings a quantitative insight on stakeholders and natural resources impacted by the modifications of ecosystem services (modifications caused by economic activities, political measures or restoration programs).

Environmentally Sound Technologies for Decision Making in Integrated Coastal Management: Prospects of Co-Operation with UNEP-IETC for Education and Training in the Mediterranean OceanDocs
Casanova, L.G.C..
The present crisis in urban management in developing and 'transitioning' countries is largely the result of rapid urbanization and modernization which came to these countries without the basics of planning and management that should have gone hand in hand with them. Because economic growth was the primary goal, the advent of urban development further resulted in the degradation of the urban environment, notably its freshwater and marine resources. Today, the need for urban environmental management has become urgent more than ever especially for decision makers. Urban environmental management is a high level skill that is expected from decision makers - those who have the responsibility to establish priorities and create a balance between urban development...

Ghana: Building Local Capacity for Integrated Coastal Zone Management OceanDocs
During 1996 and 1997, a series of Bank-assisted workshops were held under the auspices of the Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana. They aimed to: (a) raise awareness among coastal communities of the need for better management of the marine and coastal ecosystem; (b) identify the priority needs of coastal communities; (c) identify appropriate, cost-effective interventions for addressing these needs; (d) raise awareness of ongoing initiatives to support such interventions; (e) assist coastal communities in the design of appropriate small-scale initiatives to address priority needs.

Integrated Coastal Zone Management: West Coast District Council (South Africa) OceanDocs
Rode, B..
A National Coastal Management Policy Program was initiated in 1995 wich resulted in the "White Paper: Towards Sustainable Coastal Development in South Africa" being published on 06 june 2000 as national coastal policy. Without further reference to the national policy, it is mentioned that a Provincial Coastal Zone Policy has also been commissioned under the Western Cape Planning and Development Act, 1999 (Act 7 of 1999), with a consultative draft report finalized in May 2000.

Quantification of interdependencies between economic systems and ecosystem services: An input-output model applied to the Seine estuary ArchiMer
Cordier, Mateo; Perez Agundez, José A.; O'Connor, Martin; Rochette, Sebastien; Hecq, Walter.
The aim of this paper is to assess the possible contribution of an input-output model towards two of the basic principles of the sustainability strategy of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) and Post-Normal Science. According to these principles, decision-support tools should offer a holistic perspective and handle high uncertainty. The difficulties in reaching sustainability are due partly to the prevailing use of "narrow-system-boundary" tools that are non-holistic. Consequently, they fail to capture important ecosystem services and ignore interdependencies between them. To comply with the basic principles, our method allows environmental assets to be evaluated in multiple units and integrates results from recent researches in natural sciences....

The multi-use in wind farm projects: more conflicts or a win-win opportunity? ArchiMer
Lacroix, Denis; Pioch, Sylvain.
The pressures on the use of the seashore are steadily rising, not only in developed countries but worldwide. Anthropogenic activity has long impacted the marine continental shelf down to a depth of approximately -200 m. New activities are now affecting this coastal space such as renewable energies, recreational uses and aquaculture in addition to the traditional ones of navigation or fishing. This evolution raises new sources of conflict amongst users which can require state involvement in order to manage the different stakeholders and pressure groups. However, the coastal space still offers a large potential for development for two reasons. Firstly, the physical three dimensional potential of this space enables the whole water column to be used,...
